Still Life: Cappuccino Cup & Frothing Pitcher

Day 4 of #30paintingsin30days: Cappuccino With Milk, Naturally

A cappuccino, by definition, has milk.  If it didn’t, it wouldn’t be cappuccino; naturally!

Cappuccino Barista.

Greetings.  I’m a coffee barista of limited abilities.  I know how to make coffee, espresso and cappuccino.  Beyond that, I need to look up the recipes online.

Still Life: Cappuccino Cup & Frothing Pitcher

And?

So, what does that have to do with an art blog?  Well, you might have noticed that I draw and paint a LOT of coffee and espresso cups.  And, today I am using one of our cappuccino cups for the first time.

The nice thing about this cup is that it is bigger than the espresso cup I have been using.   The larger cup makes it easier to seriously look at the form.

Also, a cappuccino cup and milk frothing pitcher go together almost like salt and pepper.  It makes sense as a still life set up, at least to me.

A Story To Explain My Story.

Which reminds me, yesterday, Artists Network.com posed the following question  “How do you see your work?” to their Facebook Page.

They then shared a quote by artist Mark Rothko:

“I think of my pictures as dramas, the shapes in the pictures are performers.”

 Still Life Paintings As Stories.

In my case, I see the items in my still life arrangements as characters.  The picture plane is the stage.  And, I arrange my items as a scene.  So, when I saw the quote on Artists Network’s page I could instantly identify with it.

My milk pitcher and cappuccino cup are not yet “people”, but they are characters in the story I tell in my head while painting.

They go happily about their business on my piece of heavyweight watercolor paper.

So, there you go!

And, here’s day four of 30 paintings in 30 days.  Onward to day five!

Thank you!
