Gaining experience and understanding

Goal: Experience & Understand Fine Art

The purpose of this blog post is to introduce what drives my drawing and painting education – the desire to experience and understand fine art.  This desire includes a curiosity about the different genre’s or styles of fine art.  From realism to abstraction, I want to know and feel the art!

Background

To explain, periodically I am asked about how I arrived at my current style.  I find the question difficult to give a simple, straight answer.  If you look at my work over the past 13 years, its evolved and changed.  I have made some purposeful decisions along the way.  And, sometimes I stumble on to the truths and observations that more experienced artists have already made.

Still, I think the question of how I arrived at my current artistic situation an intriguing one.  Perhaps as the year winds down, it is a good time for a review before setting my sites on future directions.

Blog – Mini Retrospective

Over the next few posts, I’ll conduct a mini-retrospective.  I think I’ll break my twelve year experience down into the following styles:

  • Early expressive realism
  • Toward non-objective abstraction
  • Exploring Cubist devices
  • Expressive realism re-visited
  • Realism

Experience and Understand

In the meantime, back to the first statement.  My desire to understand the visual arts has driven my personal artistic study.  I need to experience what it means to create an abstract painting.  I want to know how to draw from life in a realistic manner.  So, I explore.  And as I explore I learn, gain understanding, and marvel at the wonder of art.  I hope to share my experiences with you over the course of a few blog posts.

I’ll leave you with one of my early paintings.  It has the honor of being inventory number one.  I hope you enjoy it!  More soon!
