About the Show.

The show is open to Oregon artists who are active members of the Watercolor Society of Oregon.  The juror selected 80 paintings from 80 different members.

About the show specifically, it features water media paintings which are defined as paint media that can be diluted with water.  For example, paintings might be done with traditional transparent watercolor, acrylic, gouache or a mixture of these media.

And, for this show, artists can use a variety of substrates.  That is, you might see works on paper, cradleboard panels, or canvas.

Furthermore, the artistic approaches range from figuration to abstraction.  Put a different way, it will be a visual feast of creative water media paintings!

I’d like to add, this is a show of colleagues and friends.  As such, I feel honored to have my painting shown with such a wonderful group of artists.

About the Painting.

My painting “Circular Conversations” is a watercolor painting done on paper.  I would like to explain the process in more detail.  The painting is based on a small colored pencil drawing I created in my sketchbook.  But, it wasn’t a straight forward process.  That is, I didn’t sit down to draw a cat and woman conversing with each other.

Instead, my process was a slow one.  I drew a few lines, and soon enough, I was seeing a woman sitting down. As I drew a bit more, I wondered what she might be doing?  And, slowly a cat appeared in my head.  So, naturally, I had to draw her.  Now what?  Something is missing.   Hmmm, I had to think of something else, though now the drawing is dictating some of the inputs, like the lines hinting at a bench for the cat and woman to sit on.

Once I liked the composition, I enlarged the drawing.  Once I start painting, there is still some thought and adjustments.

Eventually, I arrive at a point with an image of a cat and a woman conversing via body language, perhaps?  Or, maybe more accurately, communicating through the elements of painting design: color, shape and design.

And, yes, I hope you can feel my sense of humor.

What do you see?

Again, I would like to invite you to see the show from April 10 to May 8th.

Thank you!
